What Is a Janam Kundli? A Beginner's Guide
A Janam Kundli is your Vedic birth chart — a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. In simple words, it is a snapshot of where the Sun, Moon and planets were sitting when you took your first breath. This beginner's guide explains what a Janam Kundli is, how it is made from three small pieces of information, and what it can honestly tell you about yourself.
Most of us first meet our Kundli during marriage talks or a temple visit, folded in an old envelope. But a Janam Kundli is meant to be read, not just stored. Once you understand its basic parts, it stops looking like a confusing grid and starts feeling like a mirror.
What "Janam Kundli" actually means
The word Janam means birth, and Kundli (also spelled Kundali) means chart or coil. So a Janam Kundli is literally your "birth chart". You may also hear it called a horoscope, a birth horoscope, or in Sanskrit a Janam Patrika — a birth record.
A Kundli is built on one idea: the sky keeps moving, so the exact pattern above your birthplace at your birth minute never repeats in the same way. Vedic astrology treats that unique pattern as a blueprint of tendencies — your strengths, your lessons, and the timing of certain life phases.
It is important to be honest here. A Kundli is a tool for guidance and self-reflection. It describes possibilities and patterns, not fixed fate. Your choices, effort and family still shape your life far more than any chart.
The three things needed to make a Kundli
You cannot make an accurate Janam Kundli without three details:
- Date of birth — the day, month and year.
- Exact time of birth — ideally to the minute. This is the detail people most often get wrong, and it matters more than any other (more on that below).
- Place of birth — the city or town, so the chart can be calculated for the correct latitude, longitude and time zone.
With these three, an astrologer or a good online tool calculates where each planet stood and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon. If the birth time is off by even 15–20 minutes, some fine details can shift, so it is worth confirming your time from a hospital record or birth certificate.
The main building blocks of a Janam Kundli
A Kundli may look like a single diagram, but it is really made of a few repeating pieces. Here is a quick map.
| Building block | Sanskrit term | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 12 houses | Bhava | Areas of life — self, money, family, career, marriage, health |
| 12 signs | Rashi | The zodiac bands the planets travel through |
| 9 planets | Navagraha | The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu |
| Rising sign | Lagna / Ascendant | The sign on the eastern horizon at your birth |
| Moon sign | Rashi (Chandra) | The sign the Moon was in — your emotional, inner self |
| 27 birth stars | Nakshatra | Finer star segments that add personality detail |
Think of it like a stage play. The houses are the rooms of the house (where things happen), the signs are the costumes, and the planets are the actors. Reading a Kundli means noticing which actor is in which room, wearing which costume.
Houses (Bhava)
The chart is divided into twelve houses, each ruling a part of life — the first house is about you and your body, the seventh is about marriage and partnerships, the tenth is about career, and so on. We cover all of these in detail in the 12 houses of a Kundli.
Signs (Rashi)
The twelve Rashis — Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus) and so on — are the familiar zodiac signs. In Vedic astrology, your Moon sign is usually treated as your main Rashi, not your Sun sign.
Planets (Navagraha)
Nine planets, called the Navagraha, are the moving pieces of the chart. Each carries its own meaning — the Sun for the soul and father, the Moon for the mind and mother, Saturn for discipline and delay, and so on.
North Indian vs South Indian chart styles
When you see two Kundlis that look different, do not worry — they often show the same information in different layouts.
- The North Indian style is diamond-shaped, and the houses stay fixed while the signs move.
- The South Indian style is a square grid, and the signs stay fixed while the houses move.
Both are correct. It is simply a regional way of drawing the same sky. If your family chart looks unfamiliar, it is probably just the other style.
What a Janam Kundli can — and cannot — tell you
Used well, a Kundli can offer thoughtful guidance on:
- Your natural temperament and strengths.
- Broad themes in career, relationships, health and family.
- Timing of life phases through planetary periods (called Dasha — we explain this in Vimshottari Dasha).
- Suggested remedies and supportive practices.
What it should not be used for:
- Guaranteed predictions of exact events, dates or outcomes.
- Fear-based decisions or spending out of panic.
- Replacing medical, legal or financial advice from qualified professionals.
A good reading leaves you feeling calmer and clearer, not frightened. If any reading pushes you toward fear, treat that as a warning sign about the reader, not about your life.
How to start reading your own Kundli
You do not need years of study to begin. A sensible first-timer order is:
- Find your Lagna (rising sign) — the whole chart is read from here. Start with the Ascendant explained.
- Note your Moon sign — your emotional nature.
- See which planets sit in the first, seventh and tenth houses — self, marriage and career.
- Check which Dasha (planetary period) you are running now.
Take it slowly. Reading one house a week is a gentle, realistic pace.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Janam Kundli the same as a horoscope?
Mostly, yes. "Horoscope" is the English word for the same birth chart. The daily newspaper "horoscope" by Sun sign is a very simplified, generalised version — a full Janam Kundli is personal to your exact birth time and place.
Can I make a Kundli without my exact birth time?
You can make an approximate one, but the Lagna and house positions may be wrong without an accurate time. If you do not know your time, note it and treat the reading as general until you can confirm it from a birth record.
Does a Janam Kundli decide my future?
No. A Kundli shows tendencies and timing, not a fixed destiny. It is best used as a tool for self-reflection and planning, alongside your own effort and good sense.
At what age should a Kundli be made?
Traditionally it is made soon after birth, but it can be prepared at any age — the chart is based on your birth moment, not the date you create it. Many people make theirs as adults with no problem.
North Indian or South Indian chart — which should I use?
Use whichever style your astrologer reads comfortably. They contain the same information, just arranged differently. Beginners often find the South Indian square grid a little easier to follow.
