What Is Dasha? Vimshottari Mahadasha Explained

Dasha is the Vedic astrology system of planetary periods — stretches of time when one planet takes the lead and strongly colours your life. The most widely used system is the Vimshottari Mahadasha, a 120-year cycle in which each of nine planets gets a fixed number of years to "rule" your chart. This guide explains what Dasha is, shares the full planet-years table, and shows you how to understand which period you are running now.

Dasha is the piece that answers the timing question. A birth chart shows what tendencies you carry; Dasha suggests when they are most likely to show up. If you are new to charts, start with what a Janam Kundli is first.

What "Dasha" means

The Sanskrit word Dasha means "state" or "condition" — the planetary mood you are living through. Vedic astrology says the planets do not all act at once; they take turns. During a planet's Dasha, its themes become louder in your life.

For example, during a Jupiter Dasha you may feel drawn to learning, teaching, family growth or spiritual life. During a Saturn Dasha you may face more work, responsibility and slow-but-solid building. The planet itself does not change — its "turn" to speak does.

Vimshottari: the 120-year cycle

There are several Dasha systems, but Vimshottari (from vimshottari, meaning 120) is by far the most used. It assigns a fixed number of years to each of the nine planets, adding up to 120 years — treated as a full symbolic human lifespan.

The major period of a planet is called its Mahadasha (great period). Inside each Mahadasha are smaller sub-periods called Antardasha (also called Bhukti), where a second planet flavours the main one.

The Vimshottari planet-years table

Here is the heart of the system — how many years each planet rules in the Vimshottari cycle.

Planet Sanskrit name Mahadasha length
Ketu Ketu 7 years
Venus Shukra 20 years
Sun Surya 6 years
Moon Chandra 10 years
Mars Mangal 7 years
Rahu Rahu 18 years
Jupiter Guru 16 years
Saturn Shani 19 years
Mercury Budh 17 years

Add them up — 7 + 20 + 6 + 10 + 7 + 18 + 16 + 19 + 17 — and you get exactly 120 years. The order above is also the fixed sequence in which the periods always run.

Where your Dasha begins

Your very first Dasha at birth is decided by your Nakshatra — the birth star the Moon occupied when you were born. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is linked to a ruling planet, and that planet's Dasha is the one you are "born into".

Because you are usually born partway through that first period, your starting Dasha is often shorter than its full length. From there, the cycle simply follows the fixed order in the table. To understand the birth star that sets your starting point, see what a Nakshatra is.

Mahadasha and Antardasha — the big period and the sub-period

Reading Dasha well means looking at two layers together:

  • Mahadasha (major period): the main planet ruling a long stretch — say, 16 years of Jupiter.
  • Antardasha (sub-period): the planet ruling a shorter window inside it — say, Jupiter–Saturn, where Jupiter is the main tone and Saturn adds its own flavour for a couple of years.

So the same Jupiter Mahadasha can feel quite different from one year to the next, depending on which Antardasha is running. A Jupiter–Venus phase may feel gentle and comfortable; a Jupiter–Rahu phase may feel more restless and ambitious.

There are even finer sub-sub-periods (Pratyantar Dasha and beyond), but for everyday understanding, the Maha and Antar layers are enough.

How to read a Dasha sensibly

When you look at your current period, ask:

  1. Which planet is running? Note its nature — the nine planets are explained in the Navagraha guide.
  2. How is that planet placed in your chart? A strong, well-placed planet tends to give a smoother period; a stressed one asks for more patience.
  3. Which houses does it rule and sit in? This shows which life areas (career, marriage, home) are likely to be active.
  4. Which Antardasha are you in? This fine-tunes the mood of the current window.

A gentle rule of thumb: a "difficult" planet's Dasha is not bad luck — it is often the exact phase where you grow the most, build discipline, or finish long-pending work.

A simple way to picture the cycle

Think of the Vimshottari cycle as nine chapters of one long book, running in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — then back to Ketu. You are born into the middle of whichever chapter your birth star points to, and life then reads straight on through the rest.

Because the chapters differ so much in length — Venus gets 20 years while the Sun gets only 6 — your life naturally moves through long, slow seasons and shorter, quicker ones. A 20-year Venus Mahadasha can shape a whole stage of adult life, while a 6-year Sun Mahadasha passes more like a brisk chapter. Noticing which "season" you are in, and roughly how long it lasts, is one of the most grounding uses of Dasha.

Transits vs Dasha — two clocks, not one

People sometimes confuse Dasha with Gochar (planetary transits — where the planets are in the sky right now). They are two different clocks:

  • Dasha is your personal inner clock, fixed from birth, telling you which planet's "turn" it is.
  • Gochar (transit) is the live sky above everyone, the same for all of us on a given day.

A skilled reading looks at both together — the current Dasha for the theme, and the transits for the day-to-day weather. When a planet is strong in your Dasha and moving well by transit, its results tend to show most clearly.

An honest word on predictions

Dasha is a wonderful tool for understanding the timing and theme of life phases. But it is guidance and self-reflection, not a crystal ball. No honest astrologer can promise you an exact event on an exact date from your Dasha alone. Transits, your own effort, and your choices all matter. Use Dasha to prepare and plan — for example, knowing a demanding Saturn phase is ahead can help you pace yourself — never to live in fear.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Dasha I am running now?

It is calculated from your birth star (Nakshatra) and your date of birth. An accurate Janam Kundli report will list your current Mahadasha and Antardasha along with their start and end dates. You need a correct birth time for this to be reliable.

Is a Saturn or Rahu Dasha always bad?

No. These are demanding periods, but they often bring maturity, hard-won success and important life lessons. Many people do their best, most lasting work during Saturn Dasha. The outcome depends on how the planet is placed in your chart and how you respond.

Why does Vimshottari add up to 120 years?

The system treats 120 years as a full symbolic human lifespan. The nine planets share those 120 years in fixed amounts, so the whole cycle completes once in 120 years. Most people experience only part of the cycle in one lifetime.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

Mahadasha is the long major period ruled by one planet. Antardasha is a shorter sub-period inside it ruled by a second planet, which adds its own flavour. Reading both together gives a more accurate feel for the current phase.

Can two people have very different lives in the same Dasha?

Yes. The same Jupiter Dasha will play out differently for each person, because each chart places Jupiter in a different sign and house. Dasha is always read against your individual chart, never on its own.
